Zanzibar Island is an archipelago lying just off mainland Tanzania along the Indian Ocean. A Zanzibar Tour arouses images of pristine, palm-fringed beaches, white sands, dhows sailing in the blue waters, and welcoming locals. It’s one of the most famous beach destinations across Africa and for justified reasons.
Zanzibar comprises several small islands and two large ones – Pemba and Unguja. The capital city called Zanzibar City is situated on Unguja Island. The town is a historic and cultural centre and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Additionally, Stone Town acts as a perfect inclusion in your Tanzania Day Trip. Visit this gorgeous Island while on your Tanzania Safari to get an unforgettable safari experience.
Zanzibar Island in the Indian Ocean lies 22 miles (35 kilometres off the coast of east-central Africa. Zanzibar is in together with Pemba Island and some other smaller islands joined with Tanganyika on the mainland to form the United Republic of Tanzania. The area of the Island is around 600 square miles (1,554 sq km).
Both Zanzibar and Pemba are believed to have formed part of the African continent a long time before. The separation of Pemba occurred during the Miocene Epoch (approximately 23 to 5.3 million years ago) while Zanzibar dates from the Pliocene Epoch (about 5.3 to 2.6 million years ago) or even later.
The best time to visit Zanzibar is during the dry season which runs between June and October. This is also similar to the safari high season in Tanzania. However, this tropical island is good to visit at most times of the year, thanks to its regular sunshine and lovely weather. The weather conditions are perfect for relaxing in the sun and exploring the wonderful sights of ‘Spice Island’.
January to March offers some of the best diving conditions. April to May is the start of the long rainy days on the Island.
