The Gombe Stream National Park is one of the most rewarding safari spots in the western region. It is located in Kigoma, the capital of the Kigoma region. Stretching an area of around 35 square kilometres, the park is one of the smallest national parks in Tanzania. But it has diverse landscapes; from steep valleys and forest ranges to woodland, tropical rainforest and grasslands. The Gombe Stream National Park is accessible only by boat. The park is world-renowned for the name of Dr Jane Godall. The park has an impressive concentration of Chimpanzees that visitors can witness during their Tanzania safari.
The best time to visit Gombe and witness chimpanzees is at the end of the dry season between July and October. During this time, the chimpanzees are easy to spot at the lower slopes of the national park where you can find the fruits. And April and May are the low season and the majority of lodges remain closed during these two months. June to October is the best weather condition in Gombe Stream National Park. But if you love wildlife photography, then the best time is the dry season, from July to October.
The major attraction in Gombe National Park is the Chimpanzees. You can spot an impressive number of chimpanzees around 100 in this small park. However, there are other primates that also call the park home. These are including blue monkeys, olive baboons, red colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and vervet monkeys. Some other wildlife that you can sight during your Gombe Safari are hippos, bush pigs, small antelopes and leopards. Leopards are the main predator of chimpanzees and other monkeys. Apart from the wildlife, the park is also home to a large concentration of bird species around 200 in the count.
There are a variety of enthralling activities to do in Gombe National Park. From all, Chimpanzee trekking is the best activity to do. Apart from that, travellers can enjoy the game viewing with traditional game drive safari. If you want to walk with the footprints of the animals along with the nature sighting, a walking safari tour is the best option. You can also get engaged with snorkelling in Lake Tanganyika, the deepest lake in Africa. Hiking is also an adventurous activity to do in the park.
