Knowing by the name of ‘Endless Plains’ in the Masaai language, the Serengeti National park has renowned as a scenic and classical Tanzania Safari destination. Stretching along a vast plateau between the eastern part of the rugged Rift valley and the huge expanses of Lake Victoria, the park covers an immense 14,800 square kilometres on Tanzania’s northern border with Kenya.
Serengeti National Park is famous for its vast open grasslands which allow the tourists stunning sightings of the rich wildlife. It is one of the oldest game reserves and one of the oldest ecosystems on the earth. While the Serengeti boasts numerous resident wildlife, it is perhaps best known as the home of the Great Wildebeests Migration.
The Serengeti always makes visitors surprised, no matter what is the time of the year. Though it bowls some exceptional wildlife opportunities throughout the year, overall the best time to visit Serengeti is during the dry season from June to October.
Between June and October, travellers can witness the epic event of the great herds: the clouds of dust, thousands of wildebeest and zebras crossing the Mara River, and dramatic actions of prey and predators.
January to March is called the calving season as the great herds give birth to their younger ones. Many migratory birds also can be seen during this time.
If you want to have the Serengeti to yourself, travelling in the low season (wet season) is the best option. During this period, the park is found less crowded and camp rates are much lower. This particularly happens in mid-March to mid-May (long rains), and early November to mid-December (short rains).
Dry/High Season (June-October) | Wet/Low Season (November-March) |
---|---|
Amazing wildlife sightings due to thin vegetation and scarce water | Beautiful scenic views with green vegetation and new blossoms |
The most famous and dramatic Mara River crossing | See the new claves and many predator actions |
Lovable weather with clear skies and sunny days | Best time for birding and photographic safari |
Fewer mosquitos and insects | Fewer crowds with a more intimate safari experience |
With a remarkable number of species including over 70 big mammals and more than 500 bird species, the wildlife in Serengeti is just astounding. The most sought-after event is the Great wildebeest Migration, where around 1.5 million wildebeests, 500,000 Thomson’s gazelles and 250,000 zebras move continuously around the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.
Aside from the great herds, you will also encounter the Big5 (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino) as well as other predators like cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs. You might also see hippos, Oribi, coke’s hartebeest, klipspringer, bat-eared fox and golden jackals while on your Serengeti safari.
