The Ngorongoro Conservation Area spans vast expanses of highland plains, savannahs and lush forests. This protected area is also designed as a World Heritage Site and one of East Africa’s most popular safari destinations. It is renowned for wildlife coexisting with semi-nomadic Maasai pastoralists practising their traditional livestock grazing. This is named after the Ngorongoro Crater, the largest volcanic caldera in the World. It also encompasses several additional destinations that are worth exploring. The best example is the Olduvai Gorge-“Cradle of Mankind” where you can sight early human development. To have this distinctive experience in this diverse highland region, a Tanzania Safari is the way to go.
Ngorongoro’s wildlife remains on the steeped-walled Crater throughout the year making the game viewing experience excellent. However, the best time to visit Ngorongoro is during the dry season runs between June and October. Thin vegetation and scarce water make wildlife sightings easier. At the same time, the wet season between November to May also has a fair share as it is the prime time for bird watching and photographic safaris. Nature decorates itself with greenery everywhere during this time. And you will also be guaranteed to experience a more intimate Ngorongoro Safari experience with less crowd.
Dry/High Season (June-October) | Wet/Low Season (November-March) |
---|---|
Excellent wildlife viewing | Beautiful landscape with lush green vegetables |
Amazing weather with sunny and clear skies with hardly any rain | The optimal time for birding safaris |
More crowded safari experiences | Afternoon and evening thunderstorms |
Fewer mosquitoes and insects | A more intimate and affordable safari experience |
The protected area is renowned for its vast ecosystem with a huge concentration of large mammals in the world. The Crater is home to nearly 25,000 mammals and is also a paradise for bird enthusiasts. During the game drive safari, you can spot many wildlife species, including large predators such as lions, and cheetahs. Large mammals like elephants, buffalos, zebras, wildebeests and the rarely seen black rhino can also be seen if luck favours you.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area is rich in exotic wildlife making the safari activities more exciting and engaging. The African famous game drives are the must-do thing for every traveller. You can also spot the animals in their natural habitat through the walking safari. If you are a genuine photographer, then Ngorongoro never let you disappoint! If thinking of something more, then go for a cultural tour. There is no better way to learn about the interesting lifestyle of the nomadic warriors than a cultural safari in Ngorongoro.
